 Homework Lunch

Who

Parent volunteers

For what

Supporting student work completion (NOT tutoring in specific school subjects). Volunteers work with supervisory teachers to provide help directly to students.

When

Beginning November 1, 2010, for the remainder of this school year, during student lunch and home room periods, weekdays except Wednesdays. Volunteer time begins at 10:30 and ends at 12:30. The preference is that volunteers stay for the full two hours, but you may volunteer for less than that if needed.

How often

According to your availability… once a month, twice a month, every week…

Where

Designated RJH classroom, working with a supervising Instructional Assistant, teachers, and councilors.

What is Homework Lunch?
Homework Lunch, provides additional time, academic support and motivation for students to finish all of their assigned schoolwork. Teachers have the option of assigning students to Homework Lunch to complete assignments that contribute to the students’ achieving learning standards. The impact of a “0” for a missing assignment can be huge on a student’s academic achievement, and can be avoided through completion of the work.

What do parent volunteers do?
Parent volunteers join school teachers and staff to give students this extra opportunity to succeed in school. Because volunteers will work directly with students, you must have current Lake Washington School District volunteer approval.

See requirements at www.lwsd.org/For-Community/Volunteers/Pages/Application-Process.aspx

What is our goal?
We want to help students be successful in school.  Volunteers will help students learn how to ask the teacher who assigned the homework either the right kind of clarifying questions prior to assignments or how to approach the teacher once the assignments have been give for more details. The interactions will be similar to what parents do at home – supportive in nature, helping students understand what the homework is asking them to do, and referring technical questions back to the teachers (initially the Homework Lunch supervising IA or teacher).  Parent volunteers will provide feedback to supervising IA or teachers using informal verbal feedback.

I don’t have much time. How often would I need to volunteer?
Volunteers determine their own schedule, and may volunteer as frequently as they wish.  Homework Lunch is held each weekday, except on Wednesday early release, special student activity days (Honor Society, ASB government, and IGNITE meetings), days when school assemblies are held, and school holidays. Scheduling is done using an online password protected calendar. This scheduling technique permits everyone involved with the program to see who is scheduled when, and clearly shows potential volunteers what days are available to volunteer.

How do I learn what to do?
Volunteers are offered a brief orientation that covers both tips for volunteering and using the simple online calendar scheduling.
